Marianos, anthypatos, patrikios and strategos of Ioannopolis (Preslav) (?), 10th century. Seal (Lead, 25 mm, 8.50 g, 12 h). +[KЄ RO]HΘЄI - TⲰ C[Ⲱ ΔOVΛⲰ] Nimbate peacock standing facing, head left, with spread tail feathers. Rev. +MAPIA/[N,] ANΘVΠ' Π/[ATP]IK S CT[...]ANN૪/... in five lines, decorations of pearls above and below. Unpublished in the standard references. Some breakage and a scrape on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The name of Marianos' command as strategos is only partly preserved. He may have been commander of the Bulgarian capital of Preslav, which was temporarily named Ioannopolis in honor of the emperor, John Tzimiskes.
